The division is charged with controlling, preventing, and abating air pollution to achieve compliance with air emission regulations pursuant to the Mississippi Air and Water Pollution Control Act, applicable regulations promulgated by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and the federal Clean Air Act.
Air Southern Company addresses emissions like mercury, nitrogen oxides, sulfur dioxide and particulate matter as part of the system’s commitment to environmental responsibility. Since 1990, the system has reduced sulfur dioxide emissions by over 95 percent and nitrogen oxide emissions by over 85 percent.
Under the Clean Air Act (CAA), EPA sets limits on certain air pollutants, including setting limits on how much can be in the air anywhere in the United States.The Clean Air Act also gives EPA the authority to limit emissions of air pollutants coming from sources like chemical plants, utilities, and steel mills.
